We are recognized for pioneering grid-scale energy storage technology over fifteen years ago and launching the global energy storage industry as we know it. Today, nearly half of our new projects include a battery storage component.
Energy storage serves as an essential component to a resilient, cost-effective and flexible electric grid by being a “force multiplier” for carbon-free energy. It allows for the integration of more solar, wind, and distributed energy resources, ensuring we can deploy the stored energy to the grid when and where it’s needed most. AES’ contributions in energy storage have enabled hundreds of utilities worldwide to reduce their reliance on thermal generation.
Energy storage can enhance reliability and stability in local electricity distribution systems by enabling multiple grid services. These facilities may also use stored energy to meet peak demand for electricity, helping avoid blackouts and brownouts or even support re-energizing the grid after an extreme event.
